Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself

Beautycounter, Clean Beauty, Self Care

the blog:

You guys, I am so excited about this post. You know I’m always real with you. I share what’s on my heart, what’s worked for me in my life and how I balance motherhood, marriage, fitness and the million other things we mamas always have going on. So it’s time I finally shared the story of how Beautycounter has changed my life. I know that sounds like a crazy thing – that a beauty and lifestyle brand can change someone’s life, but it’s my truth. And it’s the truth of so many amazing women I’ve met over the last two years, so I want to share my story with you mamas.

I hope that sharing my story can inspire other women to take control of their lives, to stop putting everyone before themselves, and most importantly, to know it’s totally doable. If you’re reading this, I want you to know you deserve to live your best life and create a life you love. Just believing in yourself and making small shifts can lead to big changes and development.

To tell this story right, we have to start in 2016. That was a wild year for our family. After just settling into our home and life in St. Louis, we found out my husband’s football team was going to be relocated to Los Angeles. Goodbye St. Louis Rams, hello LA Rams! And hello cross-country move with two kids under 3. We were sad to leave our friends and community, but excited for the new possibilities in LA.

It’s always been a dream of mine to live in LA – year-round sunshine, a place bursting with creativity and opportunities—I just knew it was the kind of place I could thrive. I knew it was the push and pace I needed to step into my own opportunities. I absolutely love being a mom and wife, but I believe it’s very important for my son and daughter to see that both of their parents are striving for their own goals and pursuing their passions.

When we got to LA, we had a whole lot of stress waiting for us – the normal everyday stuff of settling into a new home and community, finding doctors and schools, and making friends and we were thrown into shooting not one but two reality TV shows as a family. Sounds like a silly thing to complain about, I know, and the shows were such a blessing and fun time. But they were also stressful. We were working on shooting the show anywhere between 50-80 hours each week for two months straight and honestly, it took a toll on me physically.

It was draining and I was constantly in full makeup. Combine the stress with constantly caking makeup on my skin, and the need to feel like I was always “on” and let’s just say, my skin was looking rough. You better believe I wasn’t about to be seen without makeup with bad skin, so the problem only got worse. I basically lived in my makeup. I was honestly afraid to ever be seen without it – and that’s hard on your skin and your confidence!

I knew that the shows wouldn’t last forever and instead saw them as part of a bigger, more important plan for my life and my family’s life. It was around this time I joined a life-changing women’s Bible study group and the community of women and the scripture reminded me of my own worth and the huge plans He has in store for me. That each and every one of us has our own special gifts and talents and we only have one life to live. I knew it was time for me to pursue what God had laid on my heart: to step out of my comfort zone and grow into the woman, wife, and mother I was meant to be. This gave me the confidence to start a lifestyle brand and blog.

Building a business and blog was all new to me and pushed me outside of my comfort zone in so many ways, and I loved the learning process. By building something I could call my own from the ground up, I’ve seen what I’m capable of and how I can help others. I am called to serve others and through this platform, I am able to serve other women like me who constantly put their family’s needs first and forget that they have their own passions they’re called to fulfill. I’m helping change their lives, inspire them, and being inspired at the same time. What a blessing!

I learned quickly that by putting myself out there, there were all of these incredible opportunities waiting for me. By being open to possibilities, I kept finding them. This inspired me to keep striving for more. But I knew I had to keep improving myself so I could say yes to the opportunities that came my way. I was running on empty and there was no way I could continue serving my family and pursuing my passions on the verge of burnout. It was time to invest in myself, starting with a health and fitness routine.

Around this time, my friend invited me to the “Better Beauty Brunch” and I had no idea what to expect. When I walked in that door that day, I never would have guessed that a silly brunch would have such an impact on my life.  As cheesy as it sounds, this was one of the most important days of my life. I’m so grateful for everything that’s come into my life since that day. You see, that’s the day I learned about this up and coming beauty and lifestyle brand founded by the rock star woman, Gregg Renfrew, called Beautycounter.

At the brunch, I learned about how few regulations there are in the beauty industry in this country. It’s shocking, guys. Women, particularly women of color, are exposed to so many toxic chemicals and ingredients from products we’re choosing to put on our bodies every single day. We’re trying to look and feel our best by using these products and they’re actually poisoning us. Wow! I was appalled to learn this and knew I couldn’t go back to my old beauty and skincare routine.

What I love about Beautycounter – aside from the products – is that its mission is to get safer beauty products into the hands of everyone, not just the rich. It works for better regulation for the whole industry and honestly, all of the women I met that day inspired me! I knew I had to be a part of this community. Obviously, I bought some product!

As soon as I started using the products, I was obsessed. Who wouldn’t be?! My skin started to clear up! I started using Beautycounter products on my kids, cause yeah, they make stuff for the whole family! My son had terrible eczema and we struggled finding anything that would bring him relief, and Beautycounter’s Super- Duper Clean Kids Body Wash did the trick! Fast forward to me telling everyone I knew and okay maybe even some randoms I didn’t know, about how amazing Beautycounter was and so finally I pulled the trigger and became a consultant.

Even though I’ve been using and loving the products and sharing with friends and family for almost two years now, I haven’t shared publicly. I know, it’s silly because I know these products work and I believe in them with all my heart! If I’m being honest the reason I’ve waited so long is because I’ve been scared to be vulnerable. It makes me uncomfortable to not have a full face of makeup on at all times, or to share my own struggles publicly.

But no more! I have decided that I won’t let my fear control me. These products are incredible and seriously have changed my life, so I’m trusting in them and in my creator. I know that if I say, “yes” and share my vulnerability and passions, I can help serve other women in need, too.

The best thing is – I’m not alone. I’m surrounded by amazing, strong women who have mentored me in this whole Beautycounter movement. They’ve lifted me up when I have felt scared or intimidated. They’ve helped me gain the confidence I needed to say, “yes” and step into this new role.

I know that I can use my voice and resources to advocate for the change I want to see which is more women taking control of their health, wellness, and ultimately leading a balanced, fulfilled life. If I can be a small part of that growth in another woman, I have served my purpose.
